National Heritage Badge for Sec 3s

These are the topics for Cadet Leader's National Heritage badge for those who missed the extra training on 14th May 2010. Please make your decision regarding who are your team members and your topic to HO John sir by 6pm 18th May 2010. You also can get the copy of the paper from him on 18th May (Tues) .

1) The efforts of state angencies such as URA and STB have been laegely successful in capturing the "spirit" and "soul" of the past and rendering the landscape of historic and cultural landscapes meaningful to Singaporeans. Do you agree? Provide and discuss relevant examples to illustrate your points.

2) Do you think Singapore has done a good job in preserving the heritage of Singapore? Provide and discuss relevant and varying examples to illustrate your points.

3) Pick a historic district (eg Chinatown, Kampong Glam etc) and discuss in great details the following points:

(i) The way the heritage landscapes are constructed and preserved
(ii) The public and evaluation

4) It has been argued that Singapore's street names do not only contain its history, but also through them, the struggles of nationhood may be glimpsed. What are the strategies used by the state to inscribe a sense of nationhood into the names of Singapore streets? Do you think these strategies are effective? What were the people's reactions?

5) For the "National Monuments" which have been gazetted, discuss whether they have been ffective as "landscapes of nationhood". Give reasons to support your answer, quoting evidence as necessary.

6) Singapore's foremost national symbol is undoubtly the Merlion. Discuss.

7)Discuss in great details the future challenges that you think Singapore will face in preserving our heritage.

8) What debates and conflicts have arisen as a result of the presence of more foreigners in Singapore? Do you think Singapore's heritage is thus being threatened?

9) The new generation of Singaporeans have neglected the importance of heritage. Do you agree? Explan and recommend some ways that you will like to suggest to our policy markers to increase our youngster's awareness to Singapore's heritage.

1) You are not allowed to plagiarize from any written text, website or any forms of written communication. Any cadets found doing this will have have their projects rejected and disqualified from the consideration of the award of national heritage badge.

2) All reference must be quoted and stated at the end of their reports.

3) We will expect quality work from everyone. Shoddy or unprofessional work will be rejected by the National Heritage Board,

4) Projects after the deadline will NOT be accepted.

Cadet Leaders are to hand in the project by 11th August 5pm.
